Sharing best practice and challenges
In summer 2013 the schools across the Family identified the development of cross-curricular literacy and English as two areas where a cross-Family approach would be welcomed. Phil Jarrett HMI was commissioned to lead two days’ work in each school looking at these areas in the four schools that were in the Family. The leads for literacy and English then came together to work on action within their own schools and across the Family to respond to the issues highlighted.
The group has continued to work together on initiatives to improve literacy and English within RSA Academies. The schools are currently working with the Royal Shakespeare Company on plans for a joint project studying ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ in the 2014/15 school year culminating in a live broadcast into schools from Stratford.
Drawing on the success of this model in Summer 2014 a second group was established bringing together the five Heads of Maths at schools within the Family, co-ordinated by the Head of Maths at Whitley Academy. A similar group is now being set up in relation to science under the leadership of Trish Hammond, Principal of Ipsley CE RSA Academy and a science teacher by background.
The successful RSA Academies Teaching School Alliance bid provides further opportunities to extend and develop this approach.
