Whitley Academy celebrates 60 years
On Thursday 1 October, Whitley Academy celebrated 60 years of the school’s existence.
In 1955 Whitley Abbey Community School opened to the local community having cost £228,000 to build. The school’s initial intake was 480 students who were taught by just 20 teachers. Roll forward to 2015 and there are 815 students with 58 teachers and 22 teaching assistants at Whitley Academy.
Here is a slideshow that shows the origins of Whitley and how the site developed into a school up until modern day.
To commemorate the 60 year anniversary, students and staff created an archive of old photos throughout the years and buried a time capsule for future generations to discover not to be opened until a further 60 years time in 2075. Who knows what education will look like then!
